The mantra “reduce, re-use, recycle” is well known, but doesn’t fully capture the opportunities for re-using material. Recycling steel or aluminium refers to melting used metal prior to re-casting, and re-use implies a second-hand sale of a used product. However, in between these options are many opportunities to re-use the metal in components. These include surface cleaning and repair, additive processing, re-shaping and solid-state welding processes – all of which could allow the component a new-life without incurring the energy costs of melting, casting, forming and fabrication.
WellMet2050 will explore all possible opportunities for this approach, which we refer to as “non-destructive recycling”, and develop case-studies with our partner consortium to show the commercial potential of this approach.
