Background

Rachel started a PhD for the Low Carbon & Materials Group in October 2009, three months after graduating from her Manufacturing Engineering undergraduate degree at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. During her time as an undergraduate, Rachel’s interest in sustainability and low carbon technology provided her with several unique experiences, including participating in the final of the nPower Energy Challenge at Wembley Stadium, and embarking on a two-week expedition to Antarctica headed by the polar explorer Robert Swan, sponsored by BP Alternative Energy. Rachel is also involved with the charity Engineers Without Borders, acting as the co-ordinator of the Cambridge branch bursary team.

Rachel’s PhD will explore credible scenarios for meeting the 2050 emission reduction targets for the steel and aluminium sector. This PhD is part of the WellMet project.
