James studied Mechanical Engineering at Cambridge. He did his master’s project in the Low Carbon Materials Processing Group, looking at a novel method of manufacturing cans. He graduated with a MEng, and then stayed to do a PhD.
His PhD will look at the mechanics and control of the Flexible Asymmetric Spinning machine. His vision is to fully automate the process, so that the only required input will be a CAD (Computer Aided Design) file of the final product. He will also be developing an understanding of the failure mechanisms in asymmetric spinning, and propose remedies.
